Itinerary
Welcome to Cochin — Kerala’s cosmopolitan harbour city and historic melting pot. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly received at the airport by our representative and transferred to your charming hotel in Fort Kochi, a place where colonial history and tropical beauty blend effortlessly.
Once you’ve settled in, the rest of the day is yours to relax and adjust to the gentle pace of coastal life. Take a leisurely stroll through leafy lanes dotted with Portuguese villas, watch the Chinese fishing nets sway against the Arabian Sea, or sip a cardamom-laced chai in a seaside café.
As the sun sets, the sea breeze carries with it the whispers of centuries — of spice merchants, explorers, and storytellers — setting the perfect tone for your Southern India journey ahead.
Begin your morning with a hearty South Indian breakfast before setting out to explore the layered heritage of Fort Cochin, a coastal quarter where centuries of global influence linger in every corner.
Start your guided walk at the Dutch Palace (Mattancherry Palace), gifted by the Portuguese and later renovated by the Dutch — its interior adorned with vivid murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana and royal life. Just a short stroll away lies Jew Town, where the fragrance of spices hangs in the air and antique shops line cobbled streets. Visit the historic Paradesi Synagogue, one of the oldest in the Commonwealth, its glass chandeliers and hand-painted floor tiles whispering tales of Cochin’s once-thriving Jewish community.
From there, continue to St. Francis Church, the oldest European-built church in India and the original resting place of explorer Vasco da Gama. Then walk along the breezy Fort Cochin promenade, where the famous Chinese fishing nets — gifts from ancient traders — still dip rhythmically into the sea, as they have for centuries.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kathakali dance performance, a vibrant classical art form of Kerala known for its elaborate makeup, stylized movement, and expressive storytelling.
By the end of the day, you’ll not only have walked through monuments — you’ll have walked through living history, where Cochin’s multicultural past continues to breathe in every gesture, flavour, and frame.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the colonial charms of Cochin and set off for Alleppey (Alappuzha), often dubbed the “Venice of the East.” In just under two hours, you’ll arrive at the gateway to Kerala’s enchanting backwaters, where a private houseboat — a traditional kettuvallam — awaits.
Step aboard and drift gently along a network of palm-fringed canals and shimmering lagoons. As your boat glides through tranquil waters, you’ll pass sleepy villages, swaying coconut groves, paddy fields, and fishermen casting their nets — all unfolding like a living postcard of rural Kerala. Onboard, enjoy a freshly prepared local lunch, complete with Kerala’s signature spices and flavours, as the water laps gently at the hull.
By mid-afternoon, disembark from houseboat at jetty in Alleppey and there we will transfer you to Kumarakom, a peaceful village nestled on the banks of Lake Vembanad, Kerala’s largest lake. Transfer to your resort — a lakeside retreat surrounded by swaying palms, bird calls, and serenity.
Spend the rest of your evening at leisure: take a sunset stroll along the water’s edge, listen to temple bells in the distance, or simply relax in the soothing silence of the backwaters.
Awake to the gentle sounds of chirping birds and rippling waters in the tranquil village of Kumarakom, a lush paradise nestled on the banks of Lake Vembanad. This day is dedicated to rest, reflection, and soaking in the natural beauty that defines Kerala’s backwaters.
After a leisurely breakfast at your resort, you may choose to simply relax by the pool or unwind in a hammock under swaying palms. For the nature enthusiast, a visit to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary can be arranged. This peaceful reserve, spread over 14 acres of wetland, is home to vibrant migratory birds like herons, egrets, kingfishers, and even the rare Siberian crane during winter months — a birder’s delight.
In the afternoon, consider (optional activity) indulging in a traditional Ayurvedic massage or spa treatment at the resort — a rejuvenating experience unique to Kerala. Or take a gentle sunset canoe ride through narrow canals, witnessing local life along the banks: women washing clothes, children playing, and fishermen returning with their daily catch.
As dusk sets in, enjoy dinner under a canopy of stars, with the soft lapping of lake waters and rustling palm fronds providing the perfect soundtrack to your evening.
After a leisurely breakfast, it’s time to leave the peaceful backwaters behind and journey into the lush green hills of Thekkady — home to the famed Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The drive (approximately 4–5 hours) winds through scenic landscapes where rolling plantations of tea, rubber, and spice dot the terrain, and mountain breezes replace the humid lake air.
On arrival in Thekkady, check in to your eco-resort nestled amid forested slopes and spice-scented gardens. The afternoon is yours to unwind and breathe in the crisp, cardamom-laced air — or perhaps venture out on an optional spice plantation tour, where you’ll discover the roots (literally) of Kerala’s aromatic reputation. Learn how cardamom, pepper, cloves, and cinnamon are grown, harvested, and dried — a sensory journey that ends with freshly brewed spiced tea.
As evening falls, you can attend a live Kalaripayattu martial arts performance.
Wake to the sounds of birdsong and the mist rolling over forested hills — you’re in Periyar, one of South India’s most captivating wildlife reserves. After breakfast, begin your day with a guided nature walk through the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, accompanied by trained tribal naturalists. Tread softly along forest trails as you search for signs of wildlife — from herds of elephants and playful macaques to exotic birdlife and rare butterflies.
Later in the morning, immerse yourself in Kerala’s spice heritage with a visit to a nearby spice plantation. Stroll through aromatic groves of cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg, and vanilla while learning about the farming traditions and global significance of these precious exports. It’s a hands-on, sensory-rich experience that truly brings Kerala’s nickname — “The Land of Spices” — to life.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. Consider (optional activity) an Ayurvedic massage, a boat ride on Periyar Lake, or perhaps a quiet nap amidst the chirping cicadas and rustling trees.
After a final breakfast in the cool hills of Thekkady, embark on a scenic journey into Tamil Nadu’s cultural heartland — the ancient city of Madurai. The drive (approx. 4–5 hours) takes you through changing landscapes: from lush spice plantations and forested slopes to the sun-soaked plains of southern India.
Upon arrival in Madurai, one of India’s oldest living cities, check in to your hotel and unwind. Later in the afternoon, step into the soul of the city with a visit to the awe-inspiring Meenakshi Amman Temple. A marvel of Dravidian architecture, its towering gopurams are a tapestry of carved gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures painted in brilliant hues. As you explore the temple’s labyrinthine halls, shrines, and pillared corridors, feel the energy of centuries of devotion etched into every stone.
As dusk descends, you’ll return to the temple for the evening aarti ceremony, a deeply spiritual experience that stirs all the senses. Chanting priests carry deities in an elaborate procession, accompanied by rhythmic drumming, conch shells, and bells. The flickering oil lamps, rising incense, and echoing hymns create a sacred spectacle — a living tradition that links you to the divine pulse of Madurai.
Rise early this morning to experience Madurai’s flower market, a kaleidoscope of colour and scent that awakens the city long before sunrise. Walk through bustling lanes where vendors weave fragrant garlands of jasmine, marigold, and rose with astonishing speed and grace. The air is thick with the perfume of petals, and the atmosphere hums with energy as locals haggle, pray, and prepare offerings for temples and rituals. It’s an intimate window into everyday life and devotion in Tamil Nadu.
Return to your hotel for a relaxed breakfast before enjoying the rest of the morning at leisure. You may wish to visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum, housed in a historic palace building, which chronicles India’s freedom struggle and offers rare personal artifacts of Mahatma Gandhi.
Later in the afternoon, set out for a walking tour of Madurai’s old bazaar — a vibrant maze of narrow alleys brimming with character. Accompanied by your local guide, explore streets filled with silk sari shops, brass lamps, spice vendors, banana stalls, sweetmeat counters, and goldsmiths. Every corner has a story, and every turn offers a sensory delight. Interact with shopkeepers, taste traditional snacks, and learn how centuries-old trade traditions are still thriving.
As the sun sets, sip a local filter coffee or freshly pressed cane juice and watch the city transition from bustling trade hub to sacred nightscape, illuminated once again by the glow of temple lamps and street lanterns.
After breakfast, leave the spiritual heart of Madurai behind and journey toward Kumbakonam, with a captivating detour through the culturally rich Chettinad region (approx. 5–6 hours total travel).
Nestled between rice fields and ancient temples, Chettinad is a hidden gem renowned for its ornate mansions, spicy cuisine, and timeless traditions. En route, stop in Karaikudi, the heart of Chettinad, to wander through streets lined with grand ancestral homes built by the prosperous Chettiar merchant families. These palatial mansions, some over a century old, are adorned with marble from Italy, Burmese teak, and intricate Athangudi tile work — living testaments to the region’s once-global trade links.
Enjoy an optional Chettinad-style lunch, rich in bold spices, aromatic curries, and unique local ingredients — a culinary experience.
Continue your drive through Tamil Nadu’s rural heartland to reach Kumbakonam, often called the “Temple Town” for its incredible concentration of sacred sites. Check into your peaceful hotel or resort and spend the rest of the evening at leisure.
Begin your day with a leisurely breakfast in the tranquil setting of Kumbakonam, a town famed for its sacred atmosphere, temple bells, and centuries-old rituals. Known as the “Kashi of the South,” Kumbakonam is home to some of Tamil Nadu’s most revered temples, including Adi Kumbeswarar, Sarangapani, and Ramaswamy Temple, each with towering gopurams and intricate carvings. Spend your morning exploring a few of these architectural marvels, guided by the rhythm of ancient chants and temple drums.
Later, embark on a half-day excursion to Thanjavur (Tanjore) — just over an hour’s drive — once the imperial capital of the mighty Chola dynasty and one of the most culturally significant cities in South India.
Your first stop is the awe-inspiring Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the grandest living temples in India. This monumental masterpiece, built in the 11th century by King Rajaraja Chola I, boasts a towering vimana (temple tower) over 200 feet high and a massive stone Nandi bull. Its perfect symmetry, intricate carvings, and spiritual resonance make it one of India’s greatest temple experiences.
Continue to the Thanjavur Royal Palace Complex, where you’ll find the Saraswathi Mahal Library, housing palm-leaf manuscripts, and the Art Gallery, home to exquisite Chola bronze sculptures — gods and goddesses captured in graceful poses that seem to transcend time.
After an enriching day immersed in Dravidian art, architecture, and imperial legacy, return to Kumbakonam for an evening at leisure. Relax under the stars or take a gentle stroll through the temple town’s quiet lanes.
Today is a journey through centuries of sacred architecture and spiritual depth, ending by the breezy coast of Pondicherry. After breakfast, depart from Kumbakonam and begin your temple-studded drive (approx. 5–6 hours excluding visits), exploring some of Tamil Nadu’s most treasured UNESCO and spiritual landmarks.
First Stop: Darasuram – Airavatesvara Temple
Just a short drive away lies the exquisite Airavatesvara Temple, a lesser-known gem of Chola architecture. Built in the 12th century by Rajaraja Chola II, the temple is a symphony in stone — with intricately carved panels, sculpted mandapas, and musical steps that once sang under royal feet. Its elegance and scale are striking, offering a quieter, more intimate temple experience.
Second Stop: Gangaikondacholapuram – The Chola Capital
Continue to Gangaikondacholapuram, the once-mighty imperial city of Rajendra Chola I, whose temple rivals the scale and majesty of Thanjavur’s Brihadeeswarar. Though the city itself has faded, the temple stands gloriously, with its grand vimana, majestic Nandi, and sprawling lawns offering a quiet, atmospheric visit far from the crowds.
Third Stop: Chidambaram – The Cosmic Temple
Your final temple stop is at Chidambaram, home to the unique Nataraja Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped not in a stone form, but as the embodiment of cosmic dance and pure space. This temple blends science, spirituality, and mysticism — with an inner sanctum representing the unseen, and a famed “golden roof” above Shiva’s dancing form. If timed right, you might witness a priestly ritual or devotional music echoing through the courtyards.
Evening Arrival in Pondicherry
By late afternoon or early evening, arrive in Pondicherry (Puducherry), a coastal town that was once the jewel of French India. Check in to your heritage hotel or boutique retreat and unwind.
Today, slow down and soak in the unique rhythm of Pondicherry, a town where French elegance meets Tamil soul. After breakfast, set out for a guided walking tour through the charming lanes of the French Quarter. With its mustard-yellow colonial villas, vibrant bougainvillaea, and quiet cobbled streets, this part of town feels more Mediterranean than Indian. Pause at historic buildings like the French Institute, Notre Dame des Anges Church, and the old Governor’s Palace, and learn about Pondicherry’s fascinating Franco-Tamil legacy.
Continue your walk to the peaceful Sri Aurobindo Ashram, one of the town’s spiritual pillars. Founded by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, the ashram is not just a religious retreat but a philosophy of conscious living. Visitors are welcome to sit in silent meditation around the simple but powerful Samadhi (tomb shrine) in the serene courtyard.
Later, take an optional visit to Auroville, the experimental international township just outside the city. The centrepiece, the Matrimandir (visit from outside only) is a massive golden sphere used for silent concentration and spiritual reflection — a stunning symbol of unity and inner discovery.
As the day winds down, enjoy a gentle stroll along the Promenade Beach, watching the waves crash beside locals walking, meditating, or enjoying roasted peanuts by the sea.
After breakfast, leave behind the French-Tamil fusion of Pondicherry and journey north along the scenic East Coast Road (approx. 2.5–3 hours) toward the ancient port town of Mamallapuram (also known as Mahabalipuram), where waves meet mythology and granite tells stories in stone.
On arrival, check in to your seaside resort and take some time to unwind. The rhythmic sound of the Bay of Bengal and swaying palm trees set the tone for a relaxing final destination.
Later in the day, step back into the 7th-century Pallava dynasty as you explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed monuments of Mamallapuram. Visit the iconic Shore Temple, dramatically perched by the sea, its weather-worn spires still echoing with spiritual presence. Then stroll through the Five Raths, rock-cut temples shaped like chariots, each carved from a single granite boulder and uniquely dedicated to a figure from the Mahabharata.
Don’t miss Arjuna’s Penance, a massive open-air bas-relief carved into a cliff face, teeming with animals, deities, and celestial beings — a vivid tale frozen in time.
As the sun sets, watch the golden light bathe these ancient stones, or simply relax with your feet in the sand and the ocean breeze in your hair — the perfect calm before your journey’s end.
After breakfast, begin your final journey of this richly woven South Indian adventure — driving from Mamallapuram to Chennai with an immersive stop at the sacred city of Kanchipuram (approx. 2.5–3 hours total).
Known as one of the seven holiest cities in India, Kanchipuram is steeped in spiritual energy and artistic grandeur. Begin your exploration with a visit to some of its most iconic temples, such as the Kailasanathar Temple, renowned for its ancient Pallava architecture and intricate sandstone carvings, and the Ekambareswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, with its towering gopuram and revered mango tree believed to be over 3,000 years old.
Beyond its temples, Kanchipuram is world-famous for its handwoven silk sarees — prized for their vibrant colours, rich textures, and exquisite Zari work. Stop by a traditional weaver’s workshop, where you can watch the magic of silk come to life on handlooms, passed down through generations. It’s a perfect opportunity to shop for authentic souvenirs or gifts that carry the artistry and elegance of South India.
By late afternoon, continue onward to Chennai, the gateway to your departure. Arrive and check in to a hotel near the airport.
After breakfast (or a packed meal, depending on your flight time), you’ll be transferred to Chennai International Airport for your onward journey.
As your unforgettable Southern Sojourn ends, take a moment to reflect on the mosaic of experiences — from ancient temples and spiritual rituals to peaceful backwaters, coastal breezes, and vibrant markets. You’re not just leaving a destination, but carrying home the warmth of India’s southern soul, its traditions, flavours, and timeless beauty.
