Atacama Desert 4-Day Discovery in Chile

Spend four days based in San Pedro de Atacama, with time to adjust to the altitude while exploring the desert’s main landscapes. The trip combines shared transfers, guided excursions and free moments in town, so the pace stays manageable from the first arrival day. Visits include the salt flat, Moon Valley, high-altitude lagoons, Piedras Rojas and the Tatio geysers. One evening is set aside for stargazing in the desert, using a small observatory and telescopes. Each excursion is shared and guided locally, with different guides and fellow travellers depending on the day. This is not a fixed-departure group with the same people on every activity.     Calama Airport, San Pedro de Atacama

    Arrival in San Pedro de Atacama and stargazing

    Meet at Calama Airport and take the shared transfer to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. The rest of the day is for settling in and adapting to the altitude before the evening activity. At night, head to a small observatory for a guided stargazing session with telescopes and a look at the desert sky.

    Atacama Salt Flat, Moon Valley

    Atacama Salt Flat and Moon Valley

    Start with breakfast at the hotel, then head south of San Pedro de Atacama to the salt flat. Visit Chaxa Lagoon and nearby Toconao before returning to the desert road in the afternoon for Moon Valley. The route includes stops at the Great Dune, Tres Marías viewpoint and the Amphitheater.

    Altiplanic Lagoons, Piedras Rojas

    Altiplanic Lagoons and Piedras Rojas

    Travel south toward the Sico border crossing, with breakfast along the way in a tamarugo forest. Continue to Piedras Rojas and then on to the altiplanic lagoons, including Miscanti and Miñiques, with views of the surrounding volcanoes. The day also includes a stop at the Tropic of Capricorn.

    Tatio Geysers, Calama Airport

    Tatio Geysers and return to Calama

    Depart early from the hotel and travel into the highlands to the Tatio geothermal field. Walk along the marked paths while the geysers are most active, then return by road with stops to observe the landscape, native flora and fauna, and the small village of Machuca before continuing toward Calama Airport.
