South India is a land of diverse cultures and traditions. Festivals form an integral part of the rich cultural heritage of this region. Every festival in South India has its unique significance and is celebrated with great pomp and show. In this blog post, we will take a look at the 11 most popular festivals of South India.

  1. Pongal Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated in the month of January, primarily in Tamil Nadu. The festival marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the harvest season. Pongal is celebrated by cooking rice with milk and jaggery in an earthen pot on a fire made of wood and cow dung cakes.
  2. Onam Onam is the biggest festival in Kerala, celebrated in the month of August or September. The festival marks the homecoming of the mythical king Mahabali, and it is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. The festival is characterized by the preparation of a grand feast called Onam Sadhya, which is a vegetarian meal served on banana leaves.
  3. Diwali Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated all over India, including South India, in the month of October or November. It is an auspicious festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. People decorate their homes with lights and burst firecrackers to mark the occasion.

The festival is celebrated in the month of September or October and marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. The festival is celebrated by burning effigies of Ravana and his brothers.
  5. Navaratri Navaratri is a nine-day festival celebrated all over India, but it is particularly important in the South. The festival is celebrated in honor of Goddess Durga, who is worshipped in different forms during these nine days. People fast, pray, and engage in cultural activities during this festival.
  6. Ugadi Ugadi is the New Year's Day for the people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. The festival is celebrated in the month of March or April and marks the beginning of the spring season. People decorate their homes with mango leaves and prepare a special dish called Ugadi Pachadi.
  7. Vishu Vishu is the New Year's Day for the people of Kerala, celebrated in the month of April. The festival is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Vishnu and by preparing a grand feast called Vishu Sadhya. People also give and receive gifts on this day.
  8. Karthigai Deepam Karthigai Deepam is a festival of lights celebrated in Tamil Nadu, primarily in the city of Tiruvannamalai. The festival is celebrated in the month of November or December and is marked by the lighting of a huge lamp on the top of the Annamalai Hill.
  9. Mahamaham Mahamaham is a grand festival celebrated once every 12 years in the town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The festival is celebrated in the month of February and is marked by a holy dip in the Mahamaham tank. It is believed that taking a dip in the tank during this festival cleanses one of all sins.
  10. Arattupuzha Pooram Arattupuzha Pooram is a grand festival celebrated in the town of Arattupuzha in Kerala. The festival is marked by a grand procession of decorated elephants and a display of traditional art forms.

Theyyam is a ritual form in Kerala, India. This particular Theyyam is one variation of ‘Pottan Theyyam’, a vivid, lively and colourful ritualistic performance which comes in the traditional art form of Theyyam. It is believed Pottan Theyyam is a manifestation of Shiva. ‘Pottan Theyyam’ is traditionally performed with a large fire, the embers of which ‘Pottan Theyyam’ will rest upon (with the people insisting/requesting him to get up). After the performance and customs, the locals may approach and speak with ‘Pottan Theyyam’ and receive his response and blessing.
